arcview

ArcView is a Geographic Information System software product produced by ESRI. The full name of the product is ArcView GIS. Many people believe this product has been discontinued and replaced by ESRI's ArcGIS product line. This is not correct. ArcView started as a viewer type program for data and maps made using ESRI's other software products. Over time more and more functionality was added to ArcView and it became a real GIS program capable of complex analysis and data management. The current version of ArcView GIS is 3.3* and is offered in both UNIX and Windows variants. Version 3.3 was released in May 2002 and support is planned until at least April 2006. Rumours of a 3.4 release are still only that, rumours. The current US retail price for ArcView GIS is $1,195.00 for the windows version and $2,195.00 for the UNIX version.

* confusingly, the ArcGIS corrallory to AV3, ArcMap, is also widely known as "ArcView". The current version of ArcMap is 9.1All ESRI produced extensions for ArcView GIS are currently supported with the exception of ArcView IMS. ArcView IMS was discontinued on 1 June 2004. An older version of ArcView GIS was available for Macintosh, version 3.0a, however this version was retired in 1997.
