''Families'' was a daytime soap opera produced by Granada Television and created by Kay Mellor. It followed two families; the Thompsons, based in Cheshire, England, and the Stevens, living in Sydney, Australia.The first episode was broadcast on 23 April 1990, though it only lasted a couple of years. After poor viewing figures in the afternoon slot, it was relaunched and moved to a late night slot. The show was axed in 1993 after 320 episodes.A new family was introduced during the summer of 1992 — the Bannermans. In the final episode, Fiona was left by the scorned Wife to die after taking an overdose. Her fate was unresolved.The theme music was by Matthew Scott. Several of those who worked on the series went on to higher-profile later careers: Jude Law appeared as a regular, and Russell T. Davies wrote for the programme.
