They were thought to have moved through the highlands, to the lowlands by the 15th century, during which time they became a sept of the powerful clan Douglas. Very little else is known about the family (further info from a genealogist of the family would be much appreciated, regarding their pre-american roots). It is known that some moved down the Great North Road, ending up in Lincolnshire. Various family members include John Ingle, a tudor Yeoman farmer, Henery Ingle (spelt as on the death certificate), baliff to Sir Isaac Newton and Frederick Ingle, a philanthropist who founded the Ingle family trust.
