MapInfo Corporation is a public company listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange (Stock Quote:
corporate-ir.net - MAPS). Founded in 1986 by four RPI students and a professor, MapInfo began as a Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) incubator project and was originally conceived as a navigational telematics company. The founders quickly revised their business plan to provide desktop mapping. MapInfo has focused on making mapping less science-focused, moving it away from a geographical information system (GIS)-only connotation and elevating the importance of location-based insight for decisions. MapInfo's offerings currently encompass software, services and data, deployed on desktop computers, wireless devices, and intranet, enterprise and internet servers. MapInfo employs over 800 employees, with 20 global sales offices selling into 72 countries. Annual sales in 2004 were approximately $125 million USD. It is headquartered in Troy, New York, not far from the original location of its founding.
