Another sense of the word ''mystery'' is defined by the Catholic Encyclopedia as "a supernatural truth ... that of its very nature lies above the finite intelligence".

In medieval Britain, ''mystery'' meant a craft, trade or profession. Thus an apprentice to one of the guilds would be said to be learning the mysteries of that guild.

Both of the above meanings: supernatural truth or trade may be the origin of the name mystery play applied to a form of religious drama.
