Wikipedia
, Oil on wood panel painting by Leonardo da Vinci]] , painted in 1516, Oil on wood panel painting by Raphael]] Oil painting is done on surfaces with pigment ground into a medium of oil — especially in early modern Europe, linseed oil. Other oils occasionally used include poppyseed oil, walnut oil, and safflower oil. These oils result in different properties in the oil paint, such as less yellowing or different drying times. The oil usually takes weeks to dry.It was probably developed for decorative or functional purposes in the High Middle Ages. Surfaces like shields — both those used in tournaments and those hung as decorations — were more durable when painted in oil-based media than when painted in the traditional tempera paints. Many Renaissance sources credit northern European painters of the 15th century with the "invention" of painting with oil media on wood panel — Jan van Eyck is often mentioned as the "inventor". The popularity of oil grew in 16th century Venice, where a water-durable medium was essential.Recent advances in chemistry have produced modern water miscible oil paints that can be used with, and cleaned up in, water. These are still "real" oil-paints in every sense of the meaning. Small alterations in the molecule molecular structure of the oil creates this water miscible property.A still-newer type of paint, heat-set oils, remain liquid until heated to !265–280 Fahrenheit°F (130–138 Celsius°C) for about 15 minutes. Since the paint never dries otherwise, cleanup is not needed (except when one wants to use a different color and the same brush). Although not technically true oils (the medium is an unidentified "non-drying chemical synthesissynthetic oily liquid, imbedded with a heat sensitive curing agent"), the paintings resemble oil paintings and are usually shown as oil paintings.

Stefan Hoenerloh
Stefan Hoenerloh (1960 Karlsruhe) is a german painter famous for his paintings of imaginary architecture. A strict, rectangular architecture stands in opposition to the form-system of rainwashing, bursts and circular-like colourings that are already indispensible in drawing terms. An important aspect of Hoenerlohs work is his understanding of classicism as a living, innovative discipline. Most others may see it as a political museum piece, he does not. They show a depiction of an altogether slower, perhaps gentler time. Nevertheless, for all their decayed splendour, these are not latent utopian images. There is a distorting claustrophobia inherant to any build up area- yet the eye is relieved by an attention to detail and proportion lacking in the bombast of todays technological architects. This principle of building houses next to each other in a naturally evolving system, of course, only met with very few examples in the real world. But the pictures gain the freedom playfully to turn the course of history into unimagined possibilities, that can emphasize a space in a considerably stronger way than is possible in the real world. Stefan Hoenerloh was inspired by the works of Max Ernst and the films of Tarkowski and Werner Herzog. He lives in Berlin but at times in Rome and Utah. Since 2002 he is using not only famous imaginary names from films but the titles of other artists for his pictures to call attention to the complete absurdity of the art market.
