The term comes from miners, who "rap" rock faces, pillars or pipes to test their solidity or to communicate with each other. Rap or rap music is commonly used as a synonym for the musical genre of hip hop music. "Rap" is said to be a backronym for "Rhythm and Poetry". Rapping is a form of rhythmically delivered rhyming lyrics; it is one of the elements of hip hop culture, as well as the distinguishing feature of most hip hop music. To rap with someone means to have an informal voluble conversation. The rap was a base half-penny, intrinsically worth about half a farthing, issued for the nonce in Ireland in 1721, because small coin was so very scarce at the time. It remains in the English expression "Not worth a rap". There was also a coin in Switzerland called a ''rappe'', worth the seventh of a penny.
