Sri or Shri (Devanagari श्री, official IAST transliteration ''Śrī'') — with a pronunciation halfway between ''sree'' and ''shree''— is a Sanskrit title of veneration, a Hindu honorific stemming from the Vedic religionVedic conception of prosperity. It is one of the names of Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of prosperity.''Sri'' is also the standard honorific (akin to ''MisterMr.'' in English languageEnglish) used when referring to an adult male in various Indian languages, including Bengali, Hindi, and Sanskrit, and sometimes in English as well (in an Indian context). The equivalent title for women is Shrimati (abbreviated ''Smt'').''Sri'' is commonly prefixed to the names of Hindu gods, as well as to the names of men and women who are considered great or holy, or who derive their power from that which is holy. When used as a title for gods, ''Śrī'' is sometimes translated into English as ''Lord'', but this is quite inaccurate and it is generally agreed that ''Śrī'' is best left untranslated.
