This is most often in an attempt to maximize the amount of sun that falls on the region, therefore some of the best wines come on quite steep hills, conditions which would make most other agricultural products uneconomic.A stereotypical ideal vineyard site for wine grapes (in the Northern hemisphere) is a hillside in a dry climate with a southern exposure (to maximize the sun that falls on the grapes), good drainage (to reduce uneccesary water uptake into the grapes), and good pruning (to force the vine to put all its energy into the fruit rather than foliage).

For the past 25 years, the Convention & Visitors Association of Lane County Oregon (CVALCO) has been marketing Lane County as a convention, meeting, event, and leisure-travel destination to attract overnight visits, thereby enhancing the economic and social well being of Lane County's communities. A recognized visitor industry leader, CVALCO partners with business, civic, government, and community groups, including its 500+ members. CVALCO provides visitors with services and resources to ensure a quality experience. The Official Lane County Oregon Visitor Guide, Meeting & Event Planner, Relocation Guide, Restaurant Guide, and Events Calendar are among CVALCO publications made available to visitors, as well as tools used to promote CVALCO members. CVALCO also operates a Visitor Center and mobile visitor van stocked with numerous attraction and visitor-related brochures to assist visitors. CVALCO is a private, nonprofit association funded by room tax paid by visitors using lodging facilities and campgrounds.

Black Barn Vineyards
We are a small vineyard just five minutes from the Village of Havelock North in Hawkes Bay Wine Country. Our focus is on premium Bordeaux styled red varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Our award winning whites include Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. All our wines are Estate Grown and the fruit is hand picked. With just over 20 acres many of our wines are available only through the cellar door and this website. Our elevated north facing site on the lower slopes of the Te Mata hills is not only an excellent location for grape growing it also provides us with stunning views, a warm sheltered micro-climate and a perfect situation for the visitor to spend an hour or two, a night or two or even a week or two. You can taste our wines, have lunch at the Bistro, a Summer Saturday morning at the Market, an evening at a concert in the amphitheatre or all of the above by staying in one of our properties. Because we are not large, we are very keen on building a relationship with the person who consumes our wine. This is why we encourage people into Hawkes Bay and into our vineyard. While a virtual visit is OK, nothing can replace the experience of actually being here. We are open seven days and we welcome a call or a visit some time soon.
